The number of homicides recorded by the police in 2011/12 (550) fell by 14 percent compared with 2010/11, homicide is at its lowest level since
1983 (when 550 were also recorded). The reducing trend in murder and homicide is reflected in a reduction in attempted murder (down 8%) and serious violence (GBH and ABH down 8%) across England and Wales.

In 2011/12, more than two-thirds of homicide victims were male.
The most common method of killing continues to be by sharp instrument 36% (200 cases). Gun or Firearm related murders / homicides were approximately 7% (39 cases)
Female victims were more likely to be killed by someone they knew. In most of these cases, female victims were killed by a current or ex-partner while male victims were most likely to be killed by a friend or acquaintance.
Victims aged under 16 years were most likely to be killed by a parent or step-parent.
